HTML to PSD

If you like to do most of your developing in the browser using HTML, CSS you sometimes run into an issue where you need to test out some ideas in Photoshop. Somethings just aren’t possible with CSS and HTML. Some things are faster to use Photoshop in, but laying out boxes and content is faster is HTML.

Maybe you want to develop without relying on Photoshop so much. Well, it might not make sense, but you can then create your site in HTML and CSS first then have it converted to a PSD. Page Layers will break each element into a layer. This is also great if you need a PSD to try out some new ideas for a site you don’t have a mockup for. Or if your site has changed so much from the original PSD. And Fireworks opens PSD files so you aren’t just stuck with Photoshop. So yes there is a tool to go from HTML to PSD. Most tools go the other way around, but not this one.

Just to clarify there is a program called Layers which makes every item on your screen a layer in a PSD file. However, it only works with Safari right now and it will not break each element into separate layers, so its really just for taking a browser screenshot. Page Layers is the tool you want to use for HTML to PSD conversions. Unfortunately its only available for Mac.

Adobe kills Fireworks

Adobe has announced they are killing Fireworks. Fireworks may overlap features from Illustrator and Photoshop, it does things that Photoshop is way too slow and cumbersome to do. Many UI designers, Web Developers and others know that Fireworks is just easier to deal with. Sure Photoshop has powerful Bitmap capabilities that Fireworks cannot match and I end up using a mixture of the two. I do most of my work in Fireworks, because it helps me get the job done faster. Fireworks has been lagging in features, a much needed live linked files for example. Photoshop is not the future for web design, especially for responsive design. Fireworks may not be the answer exactly, but it comes much closer than Photoshop ever will. Yes, Fireworks text rendering sucks, but it is a excellent tool when used in a combination with the other Adobe products.

Doesn’t matter if you have a blazing fast computer or not. The zoom and adjust is very slow and laggy, no amount or upgrade or RAM will fix it. End rant.

For years I’ve been saving my Fireworks PNG files as filename_FIREWORKS.png. In Adobe Fireworks CS6 finally added a dialog and a new extension .fw.png. Granted Fireworks didn’t get many new features in the CS6 though.

JavaScript Compressors for Mac OS X

Smaller is a $20 app that compresses HTML, PHP, CSS and JS. However to me that is too much to pay for a simple app, no matter how nice it is. I have a few suggestions that are free, cheaper or do even more than Smaller.
