Adobe Photoshop CS3 Is Fast

I finally got to try out Photoshop CS3 and it is faster, but I noticed that the first time you load it after a reboot, it is a little faster than it was before. However if you close it and start it back up later on it will load up very fast. I’m thinking that when Adobe did their live web cast awhile back, this is what they must of done, because it wont load super fast unless you have started it at least once before.

Adobe Bridge is still slow as ever though. I wish they would of kept the feature Photoshop 7 had, which was that it would make the icon for any PSDs show up as a preview. Although if you need to preview PSD’s in Windows ThumbView is a good app to use for that (it also supports many other formats).

ImageReady was discontinued
and all I can say is that its about time. I think Fireworks would be a better replacement for it. Of course they also dumped Freehand for Illustrator and they also dumped GoLive for Dreamweaver. Those were definately good moves as they moved forward with the strongest products. I didn’t see FlashPaper anywhere but I didn’t mess around much with Flash CS3. Director 9 will probably be released later on down the line, Macromedia always released it like a year after their other apps.

The most annoying thing about Opera

When you type in the address bar and go to tab through previous URLs, it goes to the search box instead. IE and Firefox have always let you go through your previous list with the tab button. Instead you have to pick your hand up and move it to your arrow keys or grab your mouse and move down. This does not make sense especially when you are in the midst of typing.

I figured out how to achieve what I wanted. In Opera goto Tools then Preferences. On the Advanced tab, click on Shortcuts and Edit the Keyboard Shortcuts. Then click on Advanced then on Widget Container.

Now you can modify the original “Tab” Actions to:
Next line | Focus next widget

And modify the original “Tab Shift” Actions to:
Previous line | Focus previous widget

You may have to hit enter after typing in the text for it to save those changes. Then you can click on OK on the open dialog boxes.

Adobe Creative Suite 3 CS3

I noticed in all their lists Freehand and GoLive are left out. I remember reading that they said they weren’t planning on dropping these two products but I’m guessing they are just phasing them out. Make sense to me since Illustrator and Dreamweaver are more popular. Adobe also has several sets of what they plan to release, some with a Premium Edition. Fireworks is still around, which it should be, personally I think they should drop ImageReady and Go with Fireworks as its replacement. Be sure to watch their webcast today for more info, they will probably keep a copy of it up I hope incase people miss it.

Use a Joystick for a Mouse

Whether you are setting up a MAME machine, a gaming box or just looking for an alternative to mouse pads or trackballs you might like the following two programs that let you use your joystick instead.

JoystickMouseTool is a free program and lets you setup a joystick very easily to do your mouse functions. All the basic mouse features are here, left-click, right-click, middle-click, mouse-wheel (scroll wheel) and even mouse buttons 4 and 5. You can also pick absolute mode which places the mouse exactly at the point where the joystick is and then centers the mouse when you’re not moving the joystick, that mode works best with an analog joystick. You can even set a unlock button on your joystick, which will require you to press it in order to use the joystick. It has enough options incase you have 16 joysticks hooked up or 31 buttons on your joystick.

Joystick 2 Mouse is another free program (as long as you use it for personal use, if you use it for commercial use its only $20). Unlike JoystickMouseTool this program is much more complicated to setup, but its also much more powerful. You’ll definitely have to review the help docs on the website but once you get the idea behind it, you’ll see it can do a lot of things.

It supports up to 16 joysticks, with up to 32 buttons, 6 axes and POV (Point Of View hat, in other words the Directional pad also known as the D-pad) each. You can setup several profiles and have different ones for whatever you like. You can also setup shift buttons which increases the uses of each button, axis or POV. Not only can you control the mouse, but you can do keyboard buttons (including number pad buttons, function keys), control Internet Explorer, Winamp and more.

Note: If you are setting Joystick 2 Mouse to use a joystick other than the first one, you’ll end up running into a weird bug. Even if you disable the first joystick and set it to use the second joystick and give the second joystick has its own xml file for a profile. The next time you go into the settings, you’ll have to change the joystick you”re using then change the profile manually so it loads that profile if you need to make some more changes. This seems to be a minor bug, but rest reassured if you are using the first Joystick you will have a much easier time configuring the program, since you won’t have to deal with any of that.
