History Channel Email Response

I recently sent the History Channel an email about my complaints of shows like Ice Road Truckers and Human Weapon and I got a response the next day.

Dear ___,

Thank you for your comments concerning programming on The History Channel.

With over 91 million domestic subscribers, we realize that not all programs will appeal to all viewers. However, this does not keep us from striving to provide the most diverse spectrum of programming possible.

JUST WATCHED A SHOW ON NITELINE (ABC) REGARDING A MARINE TEAM GOINING ON A NIGHTIME MISSION–THE MARINES WOULD FIND GUN CAVES IN THE ROCKS WHERE THE TALIBAN WOULD HIDE AND FIRE ON THE US FORCES—THEY SHOWED THE MARINES SPRAY PAINTING A ROCK TO MARK THE SPOT–THOUGHT THIS WAS KIND OF BLAND….i SUGGEST THAT EVERY HOLE CREVAS OR CAVE THEY FIND SHOULD HAVE A SATCHEL OF SOME TYPE OF SUBSTANCE, CHEMICAL OR ODOR PRODUCING SUBSTANCE,TAR,GLUE,ANIMAL BLOOD (PIG) BE DETONATED IN THESE HIDEOUTS, THAT WOULD RENDER THESE SPOTS TOTALY UNINHABITABLE.THE MORE OF THESE RAT HOLES THAT COULD BE EFFECTED BY SUCH AN ACTION WOULD MAKE IT EASIER FOR OUR FORCES TO TRACK AND ELIMINATE THE TALIBAN–iT WOULD ALSO ELIMINATE THE NECESSITY FOR OUR TROOPS TO HAVE TO GO ON A SEARCH MISSION INTO THESE CAVES—IN EFFECT CLOSE UP THE SAFE HIDING AREA AND IT WILL SAVE AMERICAN LIVES!!

i WATCHED YOUR NEW SHOW AMERICAN PICKERS THE OTHER NIGHT AND WAS REALLY EMOTIONALLY UPSET ABOUT IT. THERE WERE TWO ELDERLY MEN THAT I FELt WERE TOTALLY TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF. LELAND WAS THE ONE THAT THEY JUST STOPPED BY HIS HOUSE AND JUST WENT THROUGH ALL OF HIS THINGS AND OFFERED HIM LOW CASH FOR , REALLY DONT YOU THINK THAT THAT SHOULD OF BEEN LEFT FOR HIM OR HIS FAMILY TO GO THROUGH, GOOD JOB CATCHING HIM ALONE, DID IT EVER OCCURE TO YOU THAT MAYBE HE WAS JUST LONELY.
THEN THERE WAS A MAN NAMED BEAR, AGAIN YOU TOOK ADVANTAGE OF HIM WITH THE CARNIVAL RIDES, HE EVEN TOLD YOU THAT HIS FAMILY FELT IT WAS WORTH MORE BUT THAT DIDNT STOP THE SHOW FROM RIPPING HIM OFF. sO AFTER WATCHING THIS SHOW i WAS FEELING VERY EMOTIONAL. I LIKE JUST ABOUT ALL YOURS SHOWS, BUT THIS WAS WAS MADE IN POOR TASTE. ALL I CAN SAY IS MAYBE ONE DAY SOMEONE MIGHT COMe AND TAKE ADVANTAGE OF YOUR PARENTS LIKE THESE TWO AMERICAN PICKERS DID.

  10. 60 · Chris says:

In response to Karen-American Pickers made no effort to hide what they were. Leland said he didn’t want to part with one of his Samurai swords-and they didn’t pressure it. The real insult to Leland is your assumption that he didn’t posses the faculties to know if he was being taken advantage of or not. What exactly do you think he was going to do with the motorbike? Ride it? Toss it in his truck with his overflowing strength and find an interested buyer? American Pickers gave him money AND took clutter off of his hands-they didn’t pressure him. People need to learn the difference between mutually beneficial transactions and unfair transactions involving somebody that solicits pity. You insult the elderly-assuming they don’t know what they’re doing. You let the guilt you feel for not helping Leland and people like Leland, and the pity you feel for his situation make catastrophe of a normal situation. American Pickers visited Leland, asked him questions about his life and heard his stories, treated him like a real person. Your pity is the real insult. Stop campaigning for people you don’t know. Go talk to Leland, spend time with him, and ask him your own questions. If it seems like he has been put out, or he resents the American Pickers, then complain. There are so many causes out their worth your attention, and you decide to attack two guys who spend time with lonely people and give them money for items they have no use for anymore? My bet is that you personally feel guilty for not spending enough time with an elderly person in your own life. I’d lay odds on it, in fact. (Side bet-you’re unemployed or currently failing in your own business OR you work in a business that actually does take advantage of people.) Stop projecting and start reflecting. American Pickers don’t put people out of house and home or cheat them out of futures-they bring American (sometimes world) History out of the garages, attics, and weed-ridden yards of America. They walk in to your grandma’s storage closet and ask her about the history behind it’s contents. When is the last time you did that?

Im so angry at the Ryggard loggers son. They create a contest between the 2 new guys constantly telling them to hurry, hurry then when the one that I consider to be “dead weight” gets hurt they yell at and send the better worker (David) home!!! Its not rocket science to get someone to work hard for you but their tactics… well… just suck. In my opinion its the owners son who is at fault for the new guy getting hurt not David. Travis needs to go get other type of work. I have high blood pressure and when Ryggards son is on I have to leave he makes me so upset. Outside of him I love this show. Just get rid of the jerk. Melvin could stand to find other employment also, he is not a people person.

    Dear History Channel,

Two suggestions: 1. Do a program on how we could possibly pay off our national debt of $14 trillion. If we have the know-how to extract oil from coal and to get the estimated one trillion barrels of oil that’s locked up in that oil shale we have, we could trade that oil to the various countries that hold our IOU’s.
    2. About two years ago you did two programs on the “Bible Code.” You need to do a 3rd one. Here’s a list of words they can type in to see if they are in that bible code: “Atlantis – Antichrist –
2 Witnesses – UFO – Roswell, N.M. – Noah’s Ark – Men OF Renown(Gen 6:4) – Global Warming – Bermuda Triangle. Plus any other you can think of. If you like this idea, email me at rdr221@comcast.net

I think that HC is an educating and interesting program to watch, but if we speak about recent history, I can’t help noticing the obsession with the Nazi Germany theme, evil Hitler, gestapo etc. Yet at the same time, a much greater evil – the Red communist evil empire who committed atrocities against their own people and other nations on the scale that Hitler could only dream of, they seem to be untouchables. In my opinion, while most certainly Hitler is a war criminal, what he has done is ‘kinderspiele’ compared to what Stalin and the communist regime has done to the world and the long lasting, devastating effects that it left on lives of people and nations. While they speak about neoNazis, etc, they ignore neoStalinism and Russian style Nazism today. Or is this something that for the Western governments is more convenient not to discuss as they might be cut off the Russian gas and oil supplies?

These two morons know nothing special about our history. They are just up there as politicians! Why do you have Republican politicians on this show! I find them to be offensive. Their mere presence is offensive. After what the Republicans have done to this country, you now give them an honored position on your history of America? What are you thinking. The episode of “pickers” last night had them thinking what they had bought was a booby trap, but actually, I made the same device in 1954 while stationed at the USMC Recruit Depot Motor Pool Machine Shop..I was asked if I could duplicate one on loan to the Marine Corps from the DOT, State of South Carolina…
It was used to determine the reaction time of a person taking a driving exam for the Marine Corps…
In use, the hammers struck .22 cal cartridges that were filled with chalk rather than lead bullets..It was hung on the front bumper of the vehicles and a string was attached to the trip mechanism causing the cartridge to fire which left a chalk mark on the road..at the sound of the cartrige going off, the driver hit the brakes as fast as he could and the device swung forward wich caused the mechanism to release the other spring-loaded hammer which fired the second cartridge…The examiner could measure the distance between the two chalk marks and determine the driver’s reaction time by knowing the speed of the vehicle and comparing that to a chart he had with him…
I was very interested because I immediately recognized the device after over fifty years!!!!
Just wanted to pass along this bit of information…
    Sincerely,

    Jack Edgar

Regarding History Channel’s lack of mention about Indians and Africans also involved in “Who discovered America”. There is a wealth of evidence, theories and stuff on the Internet, yet no mention in their program!
Also seems the western world won World War I & II singlehanded. No mention of the over 2 million volunteers who served in the Indian Armed Forces & suffered grevious casualties. In fact Indian troops handed Hitler his first defeat at the Battle of El Alamein. The British 8th Army mostly comprised of Indians, Australians, New Zealanders and colonial troops. Had Rommel’s Afrika Corps broken through, they would have took over the Arabian oilfields from the Allies and that would have pretty much have spelled doom for the hard pressed Allies. The Indian Army also handed the Japanese a terrible defeat at the Battle of Kohima, halting them on their west ward advance. It is a well known fact that the Axis powers planned to link up, which was foiled by gallant Indian soldiers ….. while still being under colonization! They won a record number of Victoria Crosses and shed much of their blood for freedom of the Western world, who, to their shame, will not even acknowledge the fact or teach it in their History books.

First, let me state that I still consider the History Channel to be one of my favorite channels. However, as a history major and a fan of all things history, I turn on the History Channel to see things that I would hardly characterize as “history”.
Ax Men? Ice Road Truckers? MonsterQuest? Swamp People?
Come on, man. What’s that got to do with history? LOL. I’ll admit that they are somewhat interesting but they belong on the Discovery Channel or somewhere else. And don’t tell me that you want to diversify your programming to appeal to your 91 million subscribers. I’ve already seen that explanation. My point is that much of your programming does NOT fall under the category of “history”. Some, like Pawn Stars, I can somewhat understand since they’re dealing with antique items that can be considered historical aspects of Americana. But, cursing truckers and people searching for Mothman?
You know as well as I that there are so many historical programs that you could air from the history of foods (which I love) to the conquests of Ghengis Khan, that there’s no need to air angry loggers. Put them on the channel with those angry bikers, American Chopper or whatever. Leave the history on the History Channel.
