Microsoft still requires activation on Windows XP

So I finally upgraded my PC to Windows 7, then I setup a relative with my old PC with Windows XP. But since a few minor things changed in the hardware (harddrive, graphics card) I was then prompted to activate Windows. It would not work through their automated process and I had to waste about an hour after it was all done technician on the phone. Sure the technician was from India, but Microsoft is still wasting money on activation support for XP? Granted they probably have a contract with the company to provide support for Vista, Windows 7 and 8, but still. But I guess if given a free choice, people would use XP since it is still solid.
